New ATC 5.1 system greatly impacts business at Yellow Shark
Yellow Shark took delivery of a new ATC 5.1 system in January of this year and since then have seen an increase in the use of their facilities.  Re-mixing has seen a definite up turn since the beginning of the year says,” Jeremy Drew,” and we’re about to embark on our latest development which is a 5.1 mastering suite. We have started re-mixing a number of classic rock albums in 5.1 for various record companies and the demand for mastering has increased, we’re simply responding to the demand from our customers.

ATC and Yellow Shark Studios are near-neighbours in south-west England, and, since the studios' beginnings in 2003, the ATC team has been involved in its development.  "ATC has been incredibly helpful to us," says Drew, "so, when we started developing more work in surround sound formats, it was an entirely logical step to install a large-format ATC monitoring system.  The results are just superb, it really sounds fantastic."

Yellow Shark was pre-wired for 5.1 when the studio was built so installation was accomplished easily and quickly.  Drew also took the opportunity to refit completely the acoustic absorption materials in the control room to handle the monitoring upgrade.

The studio's main reference monitors are soffit-mounted ATC SCM200ASL Pro 3-way actives.  SCM20ASL portable active monitors are used for nearfield and 5.1 surround, together with an ATC C4 sub bass monitor.  For the Rainbow project, original material was received in 24-track 2" formats, transferred onto the studio's IZ Radar, and mixed on the 48-channel Soundtracs Jade console.  The versatility of this package is underlined by the identity of another recent client at the studio, the Royal Shakespeare Company, recording many hours of voiceovers.

Jeremy Drew outlines another compelling reason for his investment in 5.1, the launch of Yellow Shark Studios into the orchestral recording business. "We've just agreed a deal giving us access to the magnificent Pittville Pump Room here in Cheltenham, which offers the space necessary for large-scale orchestral recording projects such as TV and film score work.  On top of this we've managed to get Paul Golding, one of the UK's top orchestral engineers to manage this aspect of Yellow Shark's business.  Our new ATC system will be a persuasive factor in bringing the studio many of the multi-channel recording projects that will result from this diversification."
